Glam Guru experience – RCPE Fundraiser

On Saturday morning 2 April, our guest artist was Hannon Bothma, a glam guru and beauty expert. He was enthusiastically welcomed by an audience of appreciative guests at Bronberg Retirement Village.

We were also entertained by Hennie Venter, a resident of Bronberg, on his mandolin. The guests were excited
and filled the festive tables in the hall. Everybody listened with interest to the guest speaker, enjoyed eats and drinks and a festive atmosphere. Hannon had the audience listening to learn how each of them could improve their unique look and just add value to their image in the mirror. Hannon selected Vicki Botje as his model for the day, not knowing beforehand that she is one of the major organisers for the knitting and crocheting project.

Hannon participated for free for RCPE and all the profit from this morning is used by RCPE to buy wool for our knitting and crocheting project. We aim to provide beanies and scares and knee-blankets to a primary school on the western side of Pretoria.

The effort by Hannon, all the ladies who knit and crochet and everybody who contributes to this knitting and
crocheting project is sincerely appreciated.

PRETORIA EAST ROTARY ANNUAL  SCRABBLE COMPETITION

SANSPA (South African National Scrabble Players Association) is a non-profit organization, with members from all over South Africa, who pay annual membership fees to participate in various competition.

Competition are held once a month, all the players are rated and according to their ratings progress to the Gauteng Masters, SA Championship and African Championships and eventually to the World Scrabble Championships.

The entry fee of the competitions that are held monthly, cover the costs of the venue, catering and cash prizes for the winners.

About 24 years ago I approached SANSPA with the request that The Pretoria East Rotary Club host one of the monthly competition, this has been very successful until 2019.

In December 2021 SANSPA held it’s first competition since March 2019 (COVID-19 lockdown). At this competition the calendar for 2022 was announced and the Pretoria East Rotary Club was asked to host the competition on the 17th of September 2022.

As you all know, Rotarians are asked to donate prize and assist with refreshment for the day, in order to reduce the costs and increase the profit margin.

SANSPA advertises the competition on their website, facebook and also sends an email to all its members. On the day they run the competition, and the results on the day are used to adjust their ratings database. They only ask Rotary to pay them R10 per player participating.

Although only 14 players registered for this year’s Rotary competition (we have had up to 32 players), is was a great success. The prizes were well received and the players where mesmerised by the catering.

A profit of R3 500 will help boost the project reserve funds.

From my side a big thank you to all those who helped with prizes and refreshments. A special thank you to Cheryl for letting me use her home and for a assistance during the day. Also a big thank you to Alvene for her help and enthusiasm during the day.
